Differences between 100% natural VS synthetic candles.
The Bad Most synthetic candles use various types of paraffin wax which is derived from petroleum and is fairly inexpensive. When burned, paraffin can release VOCs (volatile organic compounds) like toluene into the air along with soot (akin to small amounts of diesel exhaust).
Synthetic candles use synthetic scent/fragrance chemicals that can be woven together to create an unbelievably wide variety of scents that are impossible for natural candles to create; Cookie Dough, Tootie Fruity or any other name that sounds like a jelly bean or food item. These chemicals are fairly inexpensive and sometimes when these chemicals are burned in a candle they can release a variety of toxins that might be aggravating on a person's respiratory system. Many perfume companies release candles with the same synthetic chemicals used in their perfumes.
The Good Paraffin waxes are developed with different melting points which gives the candles long burn times (over 50 hours). Synthetic chemicals also have excellent scent throw, meaning that you can REALLY smell them when burned. As mentioned earlier, the candle can be engineered to smell like pretty much anything.
Surreal Skincare's 100% Natural Candles We use a blend of beeswax, coconut wax and coconut oil which emits zero toxins. Beeswax actually ionizes the air with negative ions when burned, binding to positive ions like toxins, allergens, dust...etc and removing them from the air.
Surreal candles still have a long burn time (50+ hours) thanks to meticulous testing of waxes and ratios for hundreds of test batches.
Our scent throw is not as strong as synthetically scented candles but it is significant. We use over 30 ml of plant absolutes, oils, and resins per candle, when burned, gives a deep, long-lasting scent.
Our scented candles are more akin to natural perfumes and exist in a fairly narrow corridor of scent, we're not re-inventing the wheel here; we work with what the plants provide.
We use 100% cotton braided wicks.
Some of the most popular brands that create synthetic candles on par with Surreal's natural candle price point are Le Labo, Diptyque, Molton Brown....etc.
If you are looking for a less expensive candle, look for soy wax candles, but also expect them to burn for significantly shorter periods.
